Leadership, Connections, Recruiting, 6 Figures & 23 Other Tips [CEO Bookshelf]

You’ve heard you are what you eat, well we believe that you are what you read. Teach a CEO presents lessons from our bookshelf on how you can improve and grow your venture. We have taken gems or nuggets from our library and provide them for CEO’s, startups, entrepreneurs and business owners.

  1. The capabilities available to entrepreneurs in one-person operations are vast. It has become much easier to quickly set up a business's legal structure, operations, and distribution… (The Million-Dollar)
  2. The flexibility of Thinking increases innovation for leadership decisions. For leaders working with a team, flexible Thinking enhances creative problem solving as well as relationships by being flexible and how results are achieved. This invites greater participation and ownership. (Zoom Leadership)
  3. A person's true character is revealed over time; through words, actions, inaction and general accountability, you will be able to determine one's character. (Friend Request Accepted: Connecting in a Disconnected World)
  4. 90 Percent of business problems are actually recruiting problems in disguise. (Recruit Rockstars)
  5. Million-dollar entrepreneurs understand that no matter how lucrative their idea or what their market research proves, they won't stick with it if they aren't truly interested in it. (The Million-Dollar)
  6. Most solo business owners do almost everything themselves. There's nothing inherently wrong with being hands-on if you love the work you're doing, but that approach won't get you to $1M in revenue. What will help you break into the seven figures is to expand your capacity beyond what one person can do. (The Million-Dollar)
  7. Leaders who spend too much time on Thinking while performing their tasks may become involved in unhelpful activities like perseverating–focusing on something uncomfortable, disappointing, or threatening over and over. This process can include anticipating a negative outcome and then forgetting that it's a hypothesis. (Zoom Leadership)
  8. The point of the million-dollar, one-person business is that it give you choices–whether to keep it small while earning a great income or to continue growing it. (The Million-Dollar)
  9. DNA is, in a sense, the soul of a company, and it shapes the resulting culture in intuitive and unspoken ways. Rather than a divinely handed-down set of well-articulated tableaus, it is, instead, an a priori set of guiding principles, an inherently understood morality that requires no discussion or explanation. (Recruit Rockstars)
  10. Just because the type of business you want to run or the way you want to work hasn't been invented yet, doesn't mean you can't be the one to do things differently. (The Million-Dollar)
  11. Owners of one-person professional services business who want to break $1 million in revenue often do so in two ways: (1) by making creative use of automation, outsourcing, and help from independent contractors, or (2) by charging higher prices than their competitors. (The Million-Dollar)
  12. Taking Action is as natural as breathing; it is what produces results. (Zoom Leadership)
  13. Not everyone we meet is meant to have a significant level of importance in our lives. Some people stay in our lives forever, and others for only a short. Of time. But no matter how long they're in our lives, we met for a definite reason. Sometimes you'll know the reason in a matter of minutes, sometimes it will take more time. (Friend Request Accepted)
  14. I recommend forecasting your hiring needs for the next 2 years…. Focus on the areas in which you anticipate the most growth and begin building a pipeline. (Recruit Rockstars)
  15. Running a million-dollar one-person business isn't about toiling for long hours. Unlike in a traditional job, where your pay may be closely tied to the hours you put in, your own business income stems from how smart and selective you are about how you use your time. (The Million-Dollar)
  16. A key to making a great first impression is to remember people's names and aspects about their lives. I have a trick to help with this. I make a real effort to remember someone's name when I first hear it. I first introduced myself, then I let the person I'm talking with say his or her name, and then either I ask that person to repeat it, pretending I didn't hear it, or I repeat his or her name again, possibly using it in the first sentence of conversation. (Friend Request Accepted)
  17. Many busy leaders leave self-reflection to chance too often. Having an opportunity to notice one's inner calling, dilemma, satisfaction, or unmet need leads to a richer life. (Zoom Leadership)
  18. Turns out there's not a strong correlation between great interviewers and great employees, so I've learned to use the interview as one input into the hiring decision as apposed to the end-all, be-all factor. (Recruit Rockstars)
  19. Learning how to take a pass on interesting opportunities that may distract you from your vision and goals is the most crucial skill you can develop if you want to grow revenue exponentially as an ultra-lean business. (The Million-Dollar)
  20. If you meet someone you know you want to spend more time with later, ask if they have a business card (rule number one when you're out networking-always carry a business card!) sometimes there are people you don't want to give your car too, which is fine. You can always say, “I'm so sorry, I just ran out, but I can take yours.” (Friend Request Accepted)
  21. Leaders who cultivate an awareness of their emotions are better able to interpret and regulate them. They are better able to demonstrate empathy, which improves relationships with management, staff, and customers (Zoom Leadership)
  22. Remember, Rockstars crave challenge even more than money. Explain that you're committed to making this the most engaging, interesting role they've ever held and the greatest career challenge they've ever faced. (Recruit Rockstars)
  23. Before you attend any event, do a quick Google search to learn more about the topic, the host organization, etc. This will help you have relevant go to questions ready and make it easier for you to fit in and engage with others. (Friend Request Accepted)
